Airsoft Calculator – FPS, MPS and Joules
With Game-On’s free airsoft calculator, you can easily convert between FPS (feet per second), m/s (meters per second), and joules. This is useful for measuring your airsoft gun’s muzzle velocity, following club rules, and making sure you play safely and within legal limits.

How to use the calculator
1. Select the BB weight in grams (usually 0.20g, 0.25g, or 0.28g).
2. Enter the speed you measured in either FPS or m/s.
3. Select the correct unit from the dropdown menu.
4. Click Calculate to get the result in FPS, m/s, and joules.
Why is muzzle velocity important in airsoft?
Muzzle velocity determines how much energy the BB hits with. In airsoft, this must be kept within safe limits to prevent injuries and comply with the rules.
Safety
Always wear approved protective gear when playing airsoft. An excessive muzzle velocity can cause injuries, especially at close range. Many clubs have their own FPS and joule limits for different types of weapons, such as sniper rifles, rifles, and pistols.
Competition Rules
In Norway, the usual limits are a maximum of 1.2 joules for indoor games and 2 joules for outdoor games, but this may vary. Always check the rules at the venue where you plan to play.
Formula for Calculating Joules
The physical formula for calculating impact energy in joules is:
Joules = 0.5 × (BB weight in kg) × (m/s × m/s)
To convert from FPS to m/s, multiply the number by 0.3048.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is FPS in airsoft?
FPS stands for feet per second, and is used to measure the speed of the BB. 328 FPS is approximately 100 m/s.
What is MPS in airsoft?
MPS stands for meters per second and is the SI unit for speed. In Norway, MPS is often used together with joules.
What is a joule?
A joule is a unit of energy. It indicates how much force the BB hits with.
