Are you unsure which gas will make your airsoft pistol perform at its best without damaging the internal parts? Your choice of propellant affects everything from muzzle velocity to accuracy—especially in Norway’s varied climate. Here’s everything you need to know.
Which gas is best? A quick overview
To make things easy for you, we’ve put together an overview of the most common propellant types and when you should use them:
| Type | Pressure (PSI) | Best for... | Benefits |
|---|---|---|---|
| Green gas | ~115 | Standard pistols | Contains silicone oil for lubrication |
| Red/Black gas | ~130-150 | Metal pistols & rifles | Better performance in low temperatures |
| CO2 (12g) | ~800+ | Hard-hitting weapons | Stable pressure regardless of temperature |
1. Green gas: The reliable classic
For most players, green gas is the standard choice. Most modern airsoft pistols are designed to run on this pressure. The lower pressure causes less wear on internal components and is gentler on seals.
We often recommend Ultrair Power Gas from ASG for its reliability and consistent pressure. If you want a gas with silicone oil already added for automatic lubrication during use, Nuprol 2.0 (Green) is an excellent option.
Expert tip: Look for gas bottles marked with "Silicone Added". This means you won't need to lubricate your seals as often, as the gas helps maintain them while you shoot.
2.When should you upgrade to Red or Black gas?
When the temperature drops below 10°C in Norway, you’ll notice that green gas loses pressure. This is called the cool-down effect. Red gas has higher pressure, which compensates for the cold and ensures that the gun cycles properly.
For colder days, Nuprol 3.0 Red Gas or the extra-powerful Nuprol 4.0 Black Gas can be good alternatives, provided that your gun has a sturdy metal slide.
- Warning: Never use black or red gas in pistols with a plastic slide, as the high pressure can cause the material to crack.
3. CO2: For those who want maximum power and recoil
A 12g CO2 cartridge delivers stronger recoil (blowback) and is almost unaffected by cold temperatures. This is perfect for you if you play outdoors all year round in Norway, as CO2 remains stable all the way down to freezing temperatures.
Need a refill? We have a wide selection of CO2 cartridges in multipacks to make sure you never run out in the middle of a game.
Since CO2 is a “dry” gas, it’s crucial to apply a drop of silicone oil to the tip of every cartridge before inserting it into the magazine. This keeps your O-rings sealed and prevents leaks.
Summary – What should I choose?
If you’re a beginner with a standard gas pistol, go for Green gas. It’s the safest option for your gun and the easiest to use. Planning to play in below-freezing temperatures? Then a CO2 model is your best friend.
