The difference between waterproof and water-resistant clothing - a simple guide

What is the difference between waterproof and water-repellent clothing?

When you go out shopping for clothes that will withstand some water, it's easy to get lost in the language. Is the jacket you've bought good enough to withstand a real rainy day? Will your shoes get wet around the edges over time? Here it's a good idea to know the difference between the key words "waterproof" and "water-repellent", or "water-repellent" as it is also called.

Water-repellent clothing

Water-repellent clothing is designed to withstand splashes and light rain without immediate penetration. It is often DWR treated (Durable Water Repellent), which causes water to bead and run off the surface. Perfect for light rain and everyday use – but not for prolonged exposure or heavy downpours.

After time and use, the treatment must be renewed for the garment to remain effective. Leather and other natural materials in particular require regular impregnation to remain water-repellent.

What makes clothes waterproof?

Waterproof clothing has membranes that prevent water from penetrating but allow moisture to escape – this provides protection and breathability. Such garments often consist of several layers: a DWR-treated outer layer, a waterproof membrane, and a comfortable inner lining.

To ensure that water does not penetrate seams and zippers, these are taped and treated. Without taping, even a technically waterproof garment will be able to let water in through weaknesses in the construction.

How is waterproofness tested?

A garment is tested by exposing it to water pressure. This is measured in millimeter water column:

  • Below 5000 mm: water repellent
  • Above 5000 mm: waterproof
  • 10,000–20,000+ mm: very waterproof – suitable for extreme conditions

NB! Even high water columns are of little help if the seams are not taped!

Breathability and comfort

A waterproof garment without breathability will quickly make you wet – from the inside. Therefore, look for clothing with ventilation holes and a good membrane if you are active, so that you can ventilate moisture and heat when needed.

What should you choose?

Water-repellent clothing Suitable for those who need something light and practical for everyday use, playing with the kids, or a trip to the store in rainy weather. Waterproof clothing is for those of you who are going on a hike, mountain, boat or out in bad weather and want to stay dry no matter the conditions. Both options have their advantages - the most important thing is to choose the one that suits your lifestyle and usage style best.

Good luck on your trip – and remember that you will find everything you need. waterproof clothing, equipment and impregnation at game-on.no!
