Why choose an FG-approved gun safe?
If you have a firearms permit, you are required to store your firearm in an approved safe. The requirement applies from the first firearm, and the approval is a documented test of burglary resistance — not an assessment of how solid the safe looks. An FG-approved safe is therefore the only way to know that the storage is actually up to standard.
FG-approved gun cabinets from Raufoss
Raufoss is a Norwegian manufacturer that has been making security systems for Norwegian conditions for generations. The cabinets are built around the same approval requirements, but differ in capacity and interior design. Here are the models we carry:
- Premium 16: Spacious cabinet with space for up to 16 guns, flexible shelves and adjustable barrel supports. The largest option before the alarm limit of 25 guns kicks in. Watch Premium 16.
- Premium 10: Medium-sized cabinet for those with multiple guns with scopes mounted. A rifle with a scope actually takes up one and a half spaces in the rack, so ten spaces is more than the number suggests. Watch Premium 10.
- Basic 6: Fits three to four guns with scopes, or up to six without. See Basic 6.
- Basic 4: Compact and space-saving entry-level model for those with few weapons. See Basic 4.
- Safehouse: Smaller cabinet for pistols, vital weapon parts and valuables. Also suitable as a supplement to a larger cabinet. See Safehouse.
What sets Raufoss apart from other manufacturers?
- FG approved: Meets the requirements of the weapons regulations.
- Norwegian construction: Developed for Norwegian homes and Norwegian requirements.
- Flexible interior design: Adjustable shelves and barrel supports, so the cabinet can be adapted as your firearms inventory changes.
- Solid construction: Strong materials and documented burglary resistance.
Requirements for safe weapon storage
Weapons must be stored in an approved safe inside your permanent residence. Safes weighing less than 150kg must be bolted to the structure of the home, while safes weighing more than 150kg do not have the same requirement — but fixed mounting is recommended anyway.
It is sufficient to lock a vital weapon part instead of the entire weapon, and the alarm requirement only occurs if there are more than 25 weapons in the household. We have a full review in the article about requirements for FG-approved gun safes.
Choose the right size
The size of the locker is given in the number of weapons without scopes. Therefore, calculate as follows:
- 1–3 weapons without sights: Basic 4
- 3–4 weapons with sights: Basic 6
- 5–7 weapons with sights: Premium 10
- Larger collection: Premium 16
Also check the interior height against your longest weapon, and whether you need a shelf for ammunition, weapon cards, and cleaning kits. The shelf takes up height, but saves you from having to buy a separate storage solution.

Can I store ammunition in the same locker?
Ammunition should be stored locked up, and many people choose to lock it in the same cabinet. The weapon should be empty of ammunition while it is in the cabinet.
